Introduction
The Coast to Vines Rail Trail is one of the most popular and accessible cycling trails in South Australia, linking the southern suburbs of Adelaide with the vineyards and country towns of the Fleurieu Peninsula. Following a former railway corridor, the trail travels from Marino rocks through to Willunga, offering a traffic-free cycling experience that combines coastal scenery, rural landscapes and popular wine regions.
As a sealed rail trail with gentle gradients, the Coast to Vines Rail Trail is well suited to riders of all ages and abilities. It is a favourite for families, recreational cyclists and visitors looking to experience regional cycling in South Australia without any technical difficulties. The trail has the perfect mix of ocean views, creek lines, farmland and vineyards that contribute to it being one of the most scenic cycling routes close to Adelaide.
History
The Coast to Vines Rail Trail follows the alignment of the old Willunga railway line, which previously connected the city of Adelaide to the towns of the Fleurieu Peninsula. When the railway services stopped, the corridor began its transformation into a shared-use path, preserving the transport history of the region while developing an impactful route for cycling and walking.
Over time, the trail has been extended and improved, with sealed surfaces being developed as well as clear signage and connections to town centres being implemented, making it great for family-friendly cycling in South Australia. The addition of the Shiraz Trail section between Mclaren Vale and Willunga further strengthened its role as a key pillar for regional South Australia, linking coastal and wine-growing regions through a safe and enjoyable route.
Significance
The Coast to Vines Rail Trail plays an important role in South Australia’s cycling network by providing a direct and accessible connection between metropolitan Adelaide and the Fleurieu Peninsula. The terrain is gentle and has a high-quality surface which makes it an ideal introduction to rail trail cycling in South Australia, while still offering enough distance and variety to appeal to more experienced riders.
Explore the Trail in three Sections
Northern Section
Marino Rocks to Old Reynella
The northern section begins near Marino Rocks and moves inland from the coast through conservation areas and open reserves. This stretch of the trail transitions from the suburban surroundings into quieter riding, offering early ocean viewings before a progressive casual ride along the rail trail.
Central Section
Old Reynella to Mclaren Vale
South of Old Reynella, the Coast to Vines Rail Trail continues through open countryside and pockets of bushland before entering the McLaren Vale region. Riding here feels increasingly rural, with vineyards, open paddocks and creek crossings shaping the experience.
This section marks the shift from suburban cycling to regional cycling in South Australia. McLaren Vale provides a natural stopping point, with services, cafes and amenities close to the trail.
Southern Section
McLaren Vale to Willunga (Shiraz Trail)
The final section of the Coast to Vines Trail, often referred to as the Shiraz Trail, runs between McLaren Vale and Willunga. This stretch is particularly well known for its vineyard views, flat terrain and relaxed riding conditions.
The approach into Willunga provides a strong sense of arrival, with the historic town acting as a clear endpoint for the trail. Many riders choose to ride this section as a standalone experience or combine it with the full Coast to Vines route for a longer day on the bike.
Food and Accommodation
The Coast to Vines Rail Trail passes close to towns and regions well known for food, wine and hospitality. Riders can easily combine cycling with cafe stops, winery visits and overnight stays, particularly around McLaren Vale and Willunga.
The availability of food and accommodation along the trail makes it well suited to day rides, weekend trips or multi-day itineraries that explore the wider Fleurieu Peninsula while staying connected to a safe and enjoyable cycling route.
