Introduction
The Copper Rail Trail is one of the premier cycling trails in South Australia, ideal for recreational riders, family cycling trips, and long-distance touring. Following the historic Port Wakefield to Balaklava railway corridor, the trail spans 36 kilometres through the Yorke Peninsula and Copper Coast region, offering scenic farmland, native bushland, and historic towns.
Although originally a rail line and part of the region’s multi-use rail trail network, the Copper Rail Trail has become a favourite route for cyclists, combining gentle gradients, quiet rural roads, and gravel paths for a safe, scenic, and accessible ride. Frequent access points and town connections allow riders to customise trips, from short day rides to multi-day cycling tours.
History
The trail traces the former Port Wakefield–Balaklava railway, once vital for grain transport, trade, and regional connectivity. By repurposing this corridor, the Copper Rail Trail preserves South Australia’s rail heritage while offering a modern cycling experience. Cyclists ride past historic platforms, sleepers, and station remnants, combining heritage, history, and recreation in a single route.
Significance
The Copper Rail Trail is a key cycling route in the Yorke Peninsula and Copper Coast, catering to families, casual riders, gravel cyclists, and touring enthusiasts. Its low-traffic rural roads, gravel and compacted earth surfaces, and gentle hills make it suitable for all skill levels, while its historic and scenic features add a unique regional experience.
Cyclists can stop in towns like Port Wakefield, Bowmans, and Balaklava to enjoy cafés, local shops, and cultural sites, creating a full-day or multi-day cycling adventure. The trail also connects to other regional rail trails in South Australia, including routes that extend into the Clare Valley and Yorke Peninsula network, allowing longer touring options.
