South Australia is set for a cycling infrastructure boom with the latest round of the State Bicycle Fund and the national Road Safety Program injecting more than $22 million into cycling-friendly projects. This substantial investment will enhance bike paths, improve road safety, and make cycling a more accessible and attractive transport option across the state.

Expanding Cycling Infrastructure Across SA

The $2 million State Bicycle Fund is helping local councils build new bike paths and upgrade existing infrastructure to support active transport and healthier communities. A total of 21 projects across 14 councils will receive funding for improvements such as new shared-use paths, lane widenings, and safer crossings.

• $1.9 million is allocated to 17 projects ready for immediate construction.
• $75,000 will help councils develop plans to make future projects ‘shovel-ready’.

Some of the key projects include:

• King William Road (Unley): New bicycle lanes from Simpson Parade to the Mike Turtur Bikeway.
• Outer Harbor Greenway (Port Adelaide): Safety and connectivity upgrades.
• River Torrens Linear Trail (Adelaide): Widening paths, improving lighting, and upgrading fencing.
• Regional upgrades: New shared-use paths in Port Augusta, Port Pirie, and Victor Harbor.

The big winners include Adelaide City Council, City of Unley, City of Port Adelaide Enfield, and City of Playford, each receiving funding for multiple projects. Five regional councils are also benefiting, ensuring cycling accessibility extends beyond the metro area.

Road Safety Program: $12 Million for Safer Cycling & Walking

Alongside the State Bicycle Fund, the Australian and South Australian Governments are investing $168 million in road safety improvements, with $37 million specifically for cycling and pedestrian upgrades. More than $12 million will fund new Bicycle and Pedestrian Actuated Crossings (BPAC and PAC), wombat crossings, crosswalks, and pedestrian refuges at high-traffic locations across the state, including:

• Springbank Road, Colonel Light Gardens – PAC between Daniels Road and Eliza Place.
• James Congdon Drive, Mile End – PAC near Hughes Street.
• Lower North East Road, Campbelltown – PAC near the ARC Campbelltown.
• St Vincent Street, Port Adelaide – Raised safety platform at an existing PAC.

Additionally, three councils have secured grants for eight major cycling projects, including:

• Peacock Road, Adelaide: Separated bike lanes for the Mike Turtur Bikeway.
• Glen Osmond Road, Adelaide: BPAC to improve access to the Park Lands Trail.
• King William Road, Unley: Shared-use path extension to Greenhill Road for the Mike Turtur Bikeway.

Boosting Jobs and Future-Proofing Cycling in SA

These cycling and pedestrian projects are expected to support around 70 full-time jobs during construction, with all works slated for completion by 2025. This investment represents a significant step toward making South Australia a more bike-friendly and connected state.
